Anthony's Nose Hiking: A Nature Getaway Just Outside NYC

We did it…again! (Albeit, accidentally). We hiked Anthony’s Nose, the beautiful trail near Peekskill, New York.

The day began with a few comical mishaps…we made the train by 2 minutes after sprinting up Park Avenue, we forgot some of our snacks, and when our very friendly Uber driver, Norman, was about to drop us off, a park ranger informed us that our original trail destination was closed due to a storm that had caused over $3M worth of damage.

What were we to do? Well, a few weeks older and wiser (emphasis on the wiser), we knew there was more of the Anthony’s Nose trail to do (perhaps it was fate we had not finished in the first time). We headed back over the Bear Mountain Bridge to begin the hike at the Appalachian National Trail Scenic Parking.

The initial uphill climb is rocky, but nothing good hiking shoes and a little glute work cannot conquer.

Upon reaching the peak, we faced a choice - Anthony's Nose to the right or the Appalachian Trail to the left. Opting for the latter, we turned left and headed through a very peaceful path. While there are no viewpoints on this route, it is uncrowded and a relatively easy walk.

We made it to the Anthony’s Nose Trailhead in about 35-40 minutes, then decided to head back towards the Anthony’s Nose outlook. Again, it was a beautiful view. This time, the sky was clear, and the view was even more enchanting. We enjoyed a delicious cherry snack here, re-hydrated, then began our journey back to the Appalachain National Scenic Parking.

Once you get to the sign to begin your descent back down to the parking area, it is about a 20 minute climb down. As mentioned in our previous post, the parking “lot” is really just cars on the side of the road.

We recommend calling for your Uber at the sign or 1/3 of the way down the climb, depending on how fast you are moving as like Norman (Uber driver) reminded us, this is not NYC. Ubers take around 20 minutes to get to you.

Overall, this hike was quite enjoyable and a bit easier than starting from Camp Smith Trailhead II or Bear Mountain Bridge Toll House Trail Head. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or an aspiring explorer, Anthony's Nose promises a memorable experience.
