Exploring NYC's Governor's Island: A Day of Outdoor Adventures and Hidden Gems

Sometimes I forget that NYC is an Island…meaning it is surrounded by water and having grown up on Lake Michigan in the summers, I am down for any type of activity on the water between May and October. Ok, maybe that is an exaggeration…I am not an avid tuber, water skier, or scuba diver. But count me in for a Kayak, Jet Ski, Paddleboard, or Boating adventure.

One of our favorite features of the city are the ~$4.00 Ferry Rides you can take (highly recommended at sunset) and when we are looking to explore outside of the Island, our go-to is to explore anywhere we can get to by Ferry…simply because it is so fun getting there.

This brings us to one of the gems in New York City…Governor’s Island. This is the perfect place to engage in outdoor activities Spring through Fall.

The Island is only about a mile long. You can make the trip as long as you want. Given the size, you only need half a day to see the Island. That being said, there are many cultural museums, exhibits, and restaurants to explore…I can see how you could easily spend a full day there.
